Sunds's Lodge News
The fish are here! Its May 30 and the first guests don't arrive for a few days but the fish are already arriving. Roland brought in a 27 pound chinook of the wall today along with a 25 pound halibut taken off Malcolm Island. Dave Sund picked up a 26 pounder in Mitchell Bay several days ago and many other fish have been caught locally. Things are looking good! We'll see you soon at Sunds.....keep checking back through the summer for more updates.
Weekly Update June 10 We've been hammered these last few days with a relentless south and southeast wind that made conditions tough. Still there is hope in the increasing bait loads in the nearby waters and the density of fish in the area slowly increasing. The biggest fish of the week was Karey Lucas's 28 pounder and halibut and lings are coming in, with the biggest halibut being Gary Haugen's 39 pounder.
Weekly Update June 17 Kind of a sloppy week in paradise, with high winds and partial showers kind of hanging around all week. The encouraging side of things is the fishing, which seems to be building by the day. The 5 day trip in the first part of the week added some extra time to find the fish and all of the guests got chinook and many also got bottom fish. The biggest of the trip was Mike Dixon's 28 pounder. The weekend brought great Canadian friends from back East and better fishing was seen. Jim was able to get the big fish of the day on both Saturday and Sunday and the biggest of the trip was also a 28 pounder. Another encouraging note is the early arrival of the coho. Normally we don't see coho through the inside passage until the end of June. However right now we are seeing 5-10 coho a day at the dock and seeing some pretty large ones, with a coho taken yesterday on Captain Ray's boat at 11 pounds. When you consider those fish will grow a pound a week until they head to the rivers in September....it is really great to see them so early!
Weekly Update June 24 Our best fishing yet. The team from Fred Hill, along with friends from Sacramento, Moses Lake, and Olympia came and caught a lot of fish. Scott Ritter of Olympia, WA led the halibut fishing with a 75 lb halibut on day 2. On the salmon fishing, many different anglers landed chinooks in the high 20's. Over the weekend, our friends from Stock Building Supply came and also did very well. Schools of southbound coho have made the fishery very interesting. The entire group limited on cohos ranging from 9-13 lbs. It is the finest coho run through the Inside Passage in the last 10 years. Daryl Allen caught a tyee (again) at 30 lbs and also won some $ on the last day with a 27. Lots of fish and lots of laughs with old and new friends from Stock.
Weekly Update July 1 A very interesting week here at Sund's Lodge. At the front end of the week were the strongest chinook runs of the season. And big ones too! Larry Hoeg's group fron Indy hammered the fish with his 80 lb halibut and Ron's 35 lb chinook, Bob's 34 lb chinook and then Tom Rigney's 39 pound chinook in the afternoon. Team Oklahoma hosted by Scott Anderson easily limited on chinook and coho and ended the trip releasing chinooks. Overall, limits of chinook and coho were plentiful. By the time the weekend guests arrive anticipation hit a fevered pitch. Unfortunately, the fish didn't cooperate. There were sime nice fish taken (a 36 and 33 by Team Wales) but in general the catch was slow. Over the week all 5 species of salmon were caught for the first time of the summer and bottom fish were numerous.
Weekly Update July 8 Happy Canada Day and 4th of July! Fishing continues to be up and down, with some guests having great luck approaching limits for coho and chinook and other guests feeling snake bit. The beginning of the trip had friends from as far away as Florida and Georgia and families from Washington, Colorado, and Florida. It was a great trip, and the largest salmon was 29 pounds caught by Dan Bernal (14) and biggest halibut was caught by Ron Pair. Over the weekend, Greg and Jack hosted a trip to the lodge of great customers. For Greg it was his 5th year as a host of a trip, for Jack, it was his 25th. Cyndi Sparacio joined the tyee club and Ritchie limited on halibut. Sunny skies prevailed and fishing was generally very calm and pleasant. All 5 species of salmon were again caught this week.
Weekly Update July 15 A real heat wave took hold this week, unfortunately relating more to the weather and not necessarily to the fishing. After seeing early signs of the pink, sockeye and chum runs filling in, numbers of these fish are still low. There were some really nice chinooks taken over the week. 1 guest joined the tyee club in the front part of the week, then Joe Coluccio popped a 33 on his first afternoon out with us on Friday. Halibut fishing remained strong with lots of smaller halibut taken. Chinook fishing was hard work but most boats yielding a few nice fish a day, matched by Dean Clark's 30 pounder taken off The Wall Monday afternoon. Dean and his film crew from Sport Fish Magazine scratched out a 25, 26, 28 and 30 pounder over the trip to film a great TV show on Sund's Lodge that will air on the OLN network in January. Weather proved to be the real highlight as daytime highs have been consistently in the upper 70's with perfectly flat water.
Weekly Update July 22 The rain started on Tuesday and barely relented all week. Salmon fishing yielded some big fish, with Dan M and Stuart S both hitting the tyee club at the front end of the trip. Chinooks were still the primary salmon on the inside waters, as pinks and cohos are still not around in big numbers. Lots of halibut also were caught this week, but average size still in the 20's. Over the weekend, chinook fishing remained constant with several good opportunities per day. Biggest fish of the trip was Gary's 29 pounder. On the bottom fishing, more lings and snapper were caught this week than the past 3 weeks combined. Although fishing has been challenging, the guides have been producing good numbers. It was a good week..
Weekly Update July 29 A GORGEOUS week on the Inside Passage. Fishing conditions have continued to improve and all 5 species of salmon are now coming through. Weather and fishing merged to form an amazing trip on the front part of the week. Host Bud Anderson joined the tyee club along with guest Allen Law. Allen won a free mounted fish from Advanced Taxidermy with his catch. Lots of the gals on the trip caught numerous fish. Halibut continue to come in but smaller than average size...ranging from 20-40 pounds. During the weekend, fishing was tough in places and several guests had good luck. Barry sat in the big fish chair on several occasions and won the free mounted fish from Advanced Taxidermy with his 26.5 pound chinook. The real story line was Bob Garibaldi, who for the 3rd consecutive trip landed a 38 lb chinook on the last morning, at the exact same spot, with Geoff Millar. It is truly remarkable. In 2004, 2005 and now 2007, Bob and Geoff have teamed up at the same spot on the last morning and Bob (the closer as he is now called) has caught a 35-38 pound chinook. Way to go Bob!
Weekly Update Aug. 5, 2007 Another gorgeous week on the Inside Passage! Sunny skies prevailed throughout the week. Craig Starkey and Marcus Eminhizer hosted the couples trip on the front end of the week. And as usual, the women cleaned up on the fishing! Notably, Susan Stotlz had the biggest fish on 2 of the 4 days and her 27 pounder held up as the biggest fish of the trip. In general there were lots of fish and lots of smiles all the way around. Pete Morse and Ken Tanase showed up on Friday with their guys and had a great weekend. Chinook fishing was spotty and some guys had good luck (Bill, Charlie, Jim, Sam) but others were stuck catching the little guys. The pinks have arrived in full force so the smoker is going and guests are all leaving with lots of fish. In general, a great week of fishing and fun.
Weekly Update Aug. 12 Fishing continues to get better and better! The first half of the week saw moments of great action. Host Brian Larrabure and friends limited on chinooks in the morning session in a few hours on Wednesday. His wife Cari nailed the big halibut of the trip at 55 pounds. Son Nick caught a 32 lb chinook in the morning and went out halibut fishing and caught a 50 pounder. What a great day! The weekend group of Larrabure customers had solid fishing as well. Lots of pinks were around and the smoker has been really cranking. Chinook and halibut were also caught but the biggest was John Peters 24 on the first morning out. Sunny skies, peaceful nights, with lots of fish too. This is the good life!
Weekly Update Aug. 19 Slow fishing started the week but was punctuated by strong bites in certain areas. Rolands team on Wednesday found some fish and hit 5 big springs in the morning session. Merle's 28 was the only fish over 25 pounds for the trip. Lots of pinks were again in the area, and lots of catch and release opportunities were had for coho and sockeye. Smaller halibut continuted to come out of the strait. During the weekend, fishing picked up better than it has over the last 2 weeks. Lots of big chinooks came off the coast of Vancouver Island with the biggest being Tanner H's 32 caught with guide Lee on Sunday. That day they went 32, 27, and 25 between 2 guests. For Sunday alone, there were 8 salmon caught over 25 pounds....definitely an encouraging sight. Lots of pinks in the area had the smoker going again for the 3rd straight week. Halibut fishing remained strong in patches as guide Geoff Duddridge limited out on halibut with his guests on both Saturday and Sunday. Weather was mixed by despite patches of rain throughout the week, mostly sunny skies prevailed.
Weekly Update Aug. 26 The end of August is here and sunny daytime skies have been punctuated by cool nights with lots of stars. The smaller fish have started to hit the rivers so there has been less pinks, but luckily lots of chinooks to go around. Echelon started the week off with some big fish. Team Trail from BC and Alberta owned the chair for the first days but both Gerry and Albert held their own for Albert Lee Appliance. All in all, a great trip. Over the weekend Young Life brought a group in from California. Marty Caldwell, President of Young Life International, led nightly devotionals. It was a great trip. Larry McGary caught the biggest halibut at 55 pounds and Alan Smyth also had a real beauty. With the chinooks, Craig Long of Texas took top honors and joined the Sund's Lodge tyee club. Out of 19 anglers, 16 caught 1 or numerous chinooks. An awesome trip..and an awesome week here at Sund's Lodge!
Weekly Update Aug. 30 A fun week on the Inside Passage that saw sun, wind, rain, and often a combination of all 3! Fishing during the week was spotty but some guests (like Kevin and Steve)limited out and had great luck. Kevin joined the Sund's Lodge tyee club with his 30 pounder caught with Captain Dudds off of Cracroft Point. Hans got his 40 pound halibut that he was searching for and in general, it was a great group. Over the weekend, we got pounded by rain on Saturday and wind on Sunday. Fishing was spotty but certain guests (Pete and Julie Lackey and Herb and Rich) had some great luck. In general, guests had to work through challenging weather, but were able to pull out some good fish.
Weekly update Sep. 10 A great season comes to a close. Sam Maus Family and Friends had an amazing trip. They made up for a late arrival with a beautiful bistro day and Sam Maus showed the kids how to get it done with a gorgeous 37 pounder caught off Cracroft on Thursday afternoon. Bob Stewart and his friends came in over the weekend and we had a total blast. Fishing stayed consistent with every boat every day having good opportunities for chinooks. Renee Houston had the biggest fish of the trip with a nice 24 pounder but lots of other chinooks between 18-23 lbs were boated. All in all, a great trip! And another great season at Sund's Lodge comes to a close. We'll see you next summer!
